Storm Clean-Up Assistance Available through Volunteer Corp

ROLLA- As the Rolla Public Works Street crews continue to make headway with the pick-up of tree limbs along City streets, assistance is also available for residents who are elderly, disabled or unable to pick up and carry branches to the curb.

The Volunteer Storm Clean-up Corp, recently formed by the City of Rolla, Phelps County Community Partnership and student groups from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), assisted 12 residents Saturday, Feb. 3 with tree-limb pick-up at their homes. Thirty-one volunteers from Missouri S&T’s Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and other Missouri S&T students associated with the Missouri S&T Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life braved 20 degree temperatures, ice and wind while picking up tree limbs throughout the city.

The Volunteer Corp, led by Lori Moss from The Partnership, now consists of 75 students from Missouri S&T who are demonstrating what a valuable asset and resource they are to the Rolla community.

Eligible individuals in need of assistance with the clearing of tree limbs should call Lori Moss at The Partnership at 573-368-2849 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. These services will continue every Saturday from approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the next several weeks in conjunction with the City’s clean up efforts.

Residents who are able to pick up their own tree limbs are asked to please bring them (not to exceed 8 feet in length) to the curb and to refrain from placing them on the sidewalk or street. The free tree limb pick-up is being accomplished on a street by street basis and the City is responding to neighborhoods that are in the most need of assistance. A staging area for tree limbs is located at the end of McCutchen Drive next to the City’s Recycling Center located at 2141 Old St. James Road.

For more information regarding the City’s free tree limb pickup, please call the Public Works Department at 573-364-8659 or e-mail Steve Hargis, Director of Public Works, at shargis@rollacity.org.
